ROBERT BUDD FROM COTHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN BRISTOL
In October 2003, a man from Cotham named Robert Budd was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing child pornography. The court heard that Budd, aged 47, had become increasingly reclusive following the death of his mother, spending as much as six hours daily browsing the internet from his residence on Freemantle Road.During his online activities, Budd adopted the alias "Captain Birdseye" and engaged in conversations with other internet users involved in similar illicit activities. His online behavior was monitored by police, who uncovered his involvement in exchanging indecent photographs of minors on a website called Good Young Boys. The authorities confirmed that Budd was responsible for both downloading and sharing such material, which led to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
At Bristol Crown Court, Budd pleaded guilty to three charges of distributing indecent images and eleven charges of making such images by downloading them onto his computer. The court was shown a sample of the photographs and writings associated with him, which contributed to the severity of the sentence handed down.
Judge Simon Darwall Smith, presiding over the case, stated that the seriousness of the offenses warranted a sentence beyond the typical 12 months of custody. He emphasized the disturbing nature of the material and the need for a strong judicial response. Ramin Pakrooh, representing Budd, argued that most of the images found in his possession were at the lower end of the seriousness spectrum, but this did not alter the court's decision.
Overall, the case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of judicial measures to address such heinous crimes committed within the community of Cotham and the wider Bristol area.
