BRISTOL MAN ROBERT BERRY CAUGHT IN CHATROOM STING INVOLVING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In November 2014, a disturbing case unfolded in Bristol involving Robert Berry, a 42-year-old IT worker whose actions led to his arrest and subsequent conviction for possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

The incident began when Berry engaged in an online chat with a contact named Angie, who was later revealed to be an undercover Metropolitan Police officer.

During their digital exchange, Berry sent her seven explicit photographs depicting pre-pubescent children, including one involving a very young child being subjected to sexual abuse.

It is believed that Berry thought he was sharing these images with a like-minded individual, unaware that he was communicating with law enforcement.

Following this exchange, the police acted swiftly.

The officer, operating under the alias 'Angie,' had been tasked with infiltrating online communities where individuals with similar interests congregate.

She created a profile on a website dedicated to discussing sexual interests and accessed an incest chatroom, where she engaged with users like Berry.

The police investigation revealed that Berry had downloaded a total of 123 images and 61 videos of children involved in sexual abuse.

Among these, 11 images and 13 videos were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.

Authorities seized Berry’s computer equipment, which confirmed the presence of the illicit material.

The police found that most of the content had been downloaded between February 2010 and February 2014, with some files having been deleted, suggesting an attempt to conceal his activities.

During police interviews, Berry admitted to crossing from legal to illegal boundaries, claiming that he had only distributed the images once.

He also stated that most of the material had been deleted, implying an awareness of the illegality of his actions.

In court, Judge Graham Hume Jones sentenced Berry to a three-year community order, which includes participation in a sex offender treatment program.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offences, stating, “It has got to be realised that downloading images of this nature feeds into a market that makes its money from the abuse of children.

That is the serious nature of these offences and distributing images of this nature just enlarges that market.” Berry was also ordered to register as a sex offender for five years and was issued an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which aims to prevent any future offending.

Additionally, he was required to pay £500 in prosecution costs.

The court was informed that Berry’s actions contributed to the exploitation and abuse of children, and the distribution of such images perpetuates a harmful and illegal industry.

Defense lawyer David Scutt argued that addiction was a factor in Berry’s offending and highlighted that the majority of the images found were of the lowest concern category.

He also pointed out that Berry was already undergoing therapy and expressed hope that he would not reoffend.

Mr.

Scutt remarked, “This activity is not going to restart.

He said ‘I don’t know if I will ever get over hurting my wife so much.’ His wife is prepared to stand by him and help him, which is to be commended.” Despite the mitigating factors, the court made it clear that Berry’s actions had serious consequences.

The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Bristol and across the UK to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse images, which are a grave violation of children’s rights and safety.
