FARMER FINED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG

A FARMER has been fined £250 for causing his border collie unnecessary suffering.

Robert Barnes, 58, of Temple Farm in Kirkburton was sentenced yesterday at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that border collie Beth had exposed, inflamed skin.

She was also suffering from mange and was 2kgs underweight when she was inspected by a vet last May 11.

The dog has recovered after treatment but she remains in kennels.

The court heard that Beth was one of nine working dogs on the farm and that Barnes had taken her to the vet a few weeks before she went missing on May 8.

Barnes, who was born on the farm, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary cruelty on February 12.

The magistrates fined him £250 and gave him a conditional discharge.

They also ordered Beth be rehomed away from the farm.

Barnes asked the RSPCA to try to find her a farm, as she is a working dog.
