ROBBY SANDFORD'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN WORCESTER: JUDGE REJECTS APPEAL FOR REDUCED SENTENCE
In February 2017, a disturbing case involving Robby Sandford, a resident of Worcester, came to public attention as he faced serious criminal charges related to the abuse of young children.Sandford, who was 27 years old at the time, had a troubling history of offending that dated back to his teenage years.
His crimes included molestation and rape of two children, both under the age of 12, when he was approximately 13 years old.
These heinous acts left a lasting impact on the victims and drew significant condemnation from the community and legal authorities alike.
Sandford's criminal conduct extended beyond these initial offenses.
When he was 17, he performed a sexual act in front of a 12-year-old boy, further demonstrating a pattern of predatory behavior.
Throughout the proceedings, Sandford maintained his innocence, denying all allegations brought against him.
Despite his denials, the evidence presented in court was overwhelming.
In May of the previous year, Worcester Crown Court found Sandford guilty of multiple serious charges.
He was convicted on six counts of indecency, four counts of rape, and one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
The severity of his crimes warranted a substantial prison sentence, which the court imposed as six years of incarceration.
The sentence reflected the gravity of his offenses and the need to protect the community from further harm.
Following his conviction, Sandford sought to challenge his sentence.
In February 2017, he appeared before the Court of Appeal in London, where his legal representatives argued that his six-year term was excessively harsh, especially considering his young age at the time of the offenses.
They contended that a shorter sentence would be appropriate given the circumstances.
However, the appeal was firmly rejected by a panel of three senior judges, including Mr.
Justice Langstaff, Lord Justice Fulford, and Judge Richard Marks QC.
In their ruling, they emphasized that the original sentence was justified and that the Crown Court judge had acted within his discretion.
Mr.
Justice Langstaff stated, “In our view, the crown court judge was fully entitled to reach the conclusion he did in relation to sentence.” The judges underscored that the punishment was not excessive and upheld the original six-year term, sending a clear message about the judiciary’s stance on such grave offenses committed against children in Worcester and beyond.
