RICHARD WILLEY SCARBOROUGH SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS IN HORRIFIC CASE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Scarborough, Richard Willey, a man previously employed at a local pub, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences involving young boys. The crimes, which spanned over several years, include a disturbing collection of indecent images and multiple counts of sexual assault against minors.

Willey, aged 39 at the time of his sentencing, appeared before York Crown Court to face justice for a total of 11 charges. These charges comprised ten counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child. The offences date back to the mid-1990s and involve two boys from Scarborough, whose ages ranged from 10 to 12 at the time of the incidents. The court heard that Willey had established a troubling relationship with the boys, which began after he befriended their mothers. Over a period of two years, he would invite the children to stay at his home, take one of them camping, and even buy them gifts, actions that clearly indicated a pattern of grooming and manipulation.

Prosecutor Tina Dempster detailed to the court that these offences went unreported for several years. It was only when one of the victims, now an adult in his twenties, had a child of his own and recognized that he still struggled with issues related to his past experiences that the case was brought to light. The authorities acted after this realization, leading to a police raid on Willey’s residence. During the search, officers discovered two computers containing a staggering total of 1,297 still images and 215 videos, all depicting young boys approximately 10 or 11 years old engaged in sexual acts or in compromising situations.

In his defense, Virginia Hayton, representing Willey, explained that her client had himself been subjected to sexual abuse as a child. She argued that Willey had struggled with his own sexuality and, upon accepting that he was homosexual, turned to viewing photographs and films as a way to prevent himself from harming others. Miss Hayton emphasized that Willey was remorseful and shocked by his actions, and highlighted that he had been a hardworking individual who was trusted by friends and family, including those with children.

Judge Stephen Ashurst delivered the sentence, condemning Willey’s “unhealthy interest in young teenage boys.” The judge remarked that in some people’s eyes, no punishment could be sufficient for such heinous offences. As part of his sentence, Willey was also placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and subjected to a sex offences prevention order. This order prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16 and restricts his access to the internet and computers, aiming to prevent any further harm.

The case has left a lasting impact on the Scarborough community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the need for ongoing support for victims of sexual abuse. Willey’s actions and subsequent sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who abuse positions of trust and manipulate vulnerable children for their own depraved purposes.
