RICHARD THORNHILL FROM TROON SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG GIRL IN AYRSHIRE

In a case that has spanned over several years, Richard Thornhill, a resident of West Crescent in Troon, has been convicted and sentenced for heinous sexual offences committed against a nine-year-old girl. The disturbing incidents took place across different periods, specifically in the years 2008, 2010, and 2012, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that has now finally been brought to justice.

Thornhill’s crimes involved multiple acts of sexual assault, including a particularly disturbing incident where he forcibly inserted his hand beneath the young girl’s clothing and sexually touched her. These acts of abuse occurred at various times, with the earliest reported incidents dating back to late August 2008 and continuing until September 30, 2010. The severity and repeated nature of these offences underscore the grave breach of trust and the profound harm inflicted upon the young victim.

On February 3, during a court hearing, Thornhill, aged 63, pleaded guilty to the charges he faced, which led to his appearance before Ayr Sheriff Court for sentencing. The charges he admitted to included engaging in lewd and libidinous practices towards the girl at an address in Ayrshire, as well as inserting his hand into her clothing and touching her private parts. These admissions confirmed the disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct that spanned over multiple years.

The court heard that the assaults occurred on various occasions, with the first set of offences taking place between late August 2008 and September 30, 2010. Following this, Thornhill was also found guilty of additional sexual assaults committed between December 1, 2010, and late August 2012. The timeline indicates a prolonged period during which the young girl was subjected to these traumatic experiences.

In his sentencing, Sheriff Scott Pattison imposed a significant penalty, reflecting the gravity of the crimes. Thornhill was sentenced to 20 months in prison for each of the two charges, with the sentences to run consecutively, resulting in a total of 40 months behind bars. Furthermore, the court mandated that Thornhill be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from any potential future harm.
