RICHARD ROBERTS FROM LIVERPOOL CAUGHT IN POLICE STING AT HEATON PARK INVOLVING CHILD SEX OFFENCES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Richard Roberts, a 66-year-old man from Liverpool, was caught in a police operation at Heaton Park that revealed a disturbing pattern of child exploitation and abuse.Roberts, who previously served as a councillor representing Warbreck and was known locally for his involvement in charity work, believed he was about to meet a fellow offender to facilitate the sexual abuse of a three-year-old girl.
Instead, he was met by police officers who had set up an undercover operation to catch him in the act.
The incident took place on April 21 of this year, when Roberts traveled from Liverpool to Manchester, under the impression that he was meeting someone who would hand over his young granddaughter for abuse.
However, upon arrival at Heaton Park, Roberts was immediately arrested by the awaiting law enforcement officers.
The police investigation uncovered a horrifying collection of child sexual abuse images, which Roberts had accumulated over a span of 14 years.
Incredibly, Roberts later described his collection of illicit material as being similar to “collecting stamps,” a comment that underscores the depravity of his actions.
Further evidence found in Roberts’ vehicle included a video camera, which he had intended to use to record himself abusing the child he planned to meet.
The police had also been monitoring Roberts through an extensive online sting, where an undercover officer spent a month engaging him in internet chats.
During these conversations, Roberts, who resided on Warbreck Avenue in Liverpool, sent the officer numerous depraved images depicting child abuse.
The officer had fabricated a story about a fictional child to lure Roberts into revealing his intentions.
Following his arrest, authorities seized various computer equipment from Roberts’ home.
It was also revealed that Roberts had previously abused a vulnerable boy, a fact that added to the severity of his crimes.
The boy’s mother expressed her devastation over the revelations, stating, “All I can, and will do now, is pick up the pieces for my sweet little boy, every time this comes back to haunt him.” Roberts faced a series of serious charges, including making and distributing indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and arranging a child sex offence.
He pleaded guilty to 16 charges and was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison, with an extended license period of five years.
As part of his sentence, Roberts is required to register as a sex offender for life.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Hilary Manley described Roberts as a ‘dangerous offender’ who posed a ‘significant risk of serious harm’ to the public.
The judge emphasized that Roberts was a ‘pitiless and predatory, dangerous sexual offender against children,’ and noted that he had left his male victim ‘irrevocably damaged.’ The court also highlighted Roberts’ disturbing intent to abuse a three-year-old girl in the future.
Regarding the collection of child sexual abuse images, the judge condemned Roberts’ comparison of his collection to stamp collecting, stating that such material was far from harmless.
The judge ordered that the details of the images, which included descriptions of torture, not be read aloud in court, acknowledging the horrific nature of the content.
The police officer involved in the undercover operation was commended for their difficult and disturbing work in bringing Roberts to justice.
