RICHARD PRENDERGAST SENTENCED IN HECKMONDWIKE FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES COMMITTED 25 YEARS AGO
In a significant case that highlights the long-lasting impact of sexual abuse, Richard Prendergast, a resident of Westfield Road in Heckmondwike, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences committed nearly a quarter of a century ago.Prendergast, aged 45 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty on September 28 at Leeds Crown Court of 11 counts of non-recent sexual abuse. These offences involved two young girls who, at the time of the abuse, were vulnerable and unable to defend themselves against his actions. The court's decision reflects the gravity of his crimes and the importance of justice for victims of such heinous acts.
Following his conviction, Prendergast was ordered to serve a nine-year prison term. Additionally, he will be required to sign the sex offenders register for life, a measure that underscores the ongoing risk he poses and the community's need for protection.
Detective Constable Paul Greatorex, a member of the Kirklees Safeguarding Unit, publicly commented on the case, emphasizing the innocence and vulnerability of the victims. He stated, “Prendergast’s victims were young and innocent and were unable to defend themselves. He subjected them to terrible ordeals and then refused to admit his guilt, putting them through the ordeal of a court trial.”
Greatorex also expressed his support for the victims, praising their bravery in coming forward despite the passage of many years. “I would like to take this opportunity to praise Prendergast’s victims who not only had the bravery to come forward but also the confidence in the police that what they said to officers would be listened to,” he said.
The detective highlighted that some of the offending occurred over two decades ago, yet the investigation was thorough and persistent. “Despite the passage of time, we investigated his crimes and took action,” he added. He concluded with a message of reassurance to all victims of sexual offences, stating, “I would like to make a promise to all victims of sexual offences, no matter how long the passage of time, that if you come forward and tell police what happened you will be listened to.”
