DOMESTIC HOMICIDE: MAN GETS 12 YEARS FOR KILLING PARTNER IN BALLYMENA
Portglenone resident Richard McAuley, aged 42, was convicted of murdering his partner, 32-year-old Denise Dunlop, in Ballymena last June. The court was told that McAuley stabbed Ms Dunlop in her sitting room, with their seven-year-old daughter and her step-mother witnessing the incident.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a minimum of 12 years behind bars.
Evidence presented in court indicated that the stabbing happened after a domestic disagreement, which was described as being fueled by alcohol and drugs.
Justice Weir called the act 'senseless' and noted that it caused 'enormous and permanent harm' to his daughter by depriving her of her mother.
The case clarified that McAuley had entered the confrontation armed with a knife following a minor dispute involving their young daughter, which then escalated to violence.
The judge highlighted that McAuley’s actions were not provoked, pointing out his history of 44 convictions, none of which involved violence that would justify such a killing.
The attack was described as 'almost unbelievable in its triviality' by the court, which also reflected on the destruction wrought by McAuley’s actions.
