RICHARD KEELING SENTENCED IN NOTTINGHAM FOR DECADES-OLD ABUSE CASE
In a landmark case that has resonated deeply within the Nottingham community, Richard Keeling, a 71-year-old man from Nottingham, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison following his conviction for indecently assaulting a young girl during the 1990s. The conviction was secured after Keeling pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault, which took place at various addresses within the Bassetlaw district, a region that includes parts of Nottinghamshire.Keeling’s sentencing was handed down at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, February 14. In addition to his prison term, he was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, a legal measure designed to restrict his future conduct and protect the community from potential harm. The court’s decision underscores the severity of the crimes committed and the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse.
Detective Sergeant Neil Allsop of Nottinghamshire Police expressed his thoughts on the case, emphasizing the significance of the survivor’s bravery in coming forward. “Keeling’s significant sentence is a testament to the strength and bravery of the survivor who came forward and trusted the police service with her complaints,” he stated. He further described the case as “an appalling one which has had a far-reaching impact,” highlighting the emotional and psychological toll such crimes inflict.
Sergeant Allsop acknowledged that while the sentence cannot undo the harm caused, it offers a measure of closure and reassurance to the victim. “Keeling’s sentencing will never make up for what happened, but I hope it gives her some sense of closure and comfort to know that he has been locked up for a significant amount of time,” he added. The officer also took the opportunity to encourage other survivors of abuse, reassuring them that it is never too late to report past incidents and seek justice.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing and prosecuting sexual offenses, regardless of how much time has passed. The community of Nottingham, and the wider Nottinghamshire area, can find some solace in the fact that justice has been served, and that perpetrators like Richard Keeling are held accountable for their actions.
