MAIDSTONE MAN RICHARD GRATTIGE CAUGHT IN GLASGOW PAEDOPHILE STING
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predators and vigilant community efforts, Richard Grattige, a 48-year-old resident of Maidstone, was recently sentenced to two years in prison after being caught attempting to meet a supposed 14-year-old girl in Glasgow.Grattige, who is also known by the alias Vicky Green, believed he was communicating with a minor through WhatsApp and other online platforms.
His intentions were revealed when he traveled over 400 miles from Maidstone, Kent, to Glasgow, under the impression that he was about to meet a young girl for sexual activity.
However, his plans were thwarted by members of a paedophile hunter group, who had created a fake profile to lure him into the trap.
The vigilantes recorded the encounter, capturing Grattige’s own admissions and confessions.
The footage, which was later uploaded to social media, shows the defendant admitting that he intended to meet the girl and expressing a desire to have a relationship with her.
In the video, he is seen pleading for the chance to return home, clearly distressed by the situation.
At Airdrie Sheriff Court, Grattige appeared to face charges of communicating indecently and planning to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
The prosecution, led by Depute Fiscal Agnes Meek, detailed how the confrontation unfolded at Glasgow’s Buchanan Street bus station in September of the previous year.
According to Ms.
Meek, the online profile used in the sting was created under the name 'Taylor,' claiming to be 14 but marked as 18 due to platform restrictions.
The profile received messages from an account named 'Jack,' accompanied by a photo of a 47-year-old male, later identified as Grattige.
The defendant sent sexual messages to the fake profile, initially unaware that 'Taylor' was a minor.
Once he was informed of her true age, he responded with comments indicating he could not have fun with her because of her age, but continued to engage in sexualized conversations.
Further communications revealed that Grattige provided his WhatsApp number and email address, and the conversations became increasingly explicit.
He asked if she had a boyfriend, expressed a desire to have sex when she was older, and even discussed bringing condoms for their meeting.
He also claimed that his feelings were not about sex but about love, stating, “I just love you so much.” When confronted by the vigilantes, Grattige was recorded admitting his plans to meet the girl in Glasgow.
The group, known as Wolf Pack Hunters, then uploaded the footage to Facebook, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.
During the hearing, Alan Cox, representing Grattige, mentioned that his client was in the process of transitioning to become female but had temporarily stopped hormone treatment while in custody at Barlinnie Prison.
Cox stated that Grattige intended to resume hormone therapy once he was able to do so.
Judge Sheriff Frank Pieri sentenced Grattige to two years in prison and ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
Additionally, he was placed under supervision for one year following his release, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community from potential reoffending.
