RICHARD GILMORE OF SWINDON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE ON CHILD IN THE 1970S AND 1990S
In a case that has spanned decades, Richard Gilmore, an 87-year-old resident of Swindon, was sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to multiple sexual offenses committed against a young girl. The crimes, which involved five counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency, took place over a prolonged period from the late 1970s through to the 1990s, when the victim was only seven years old.Gilmore, who resides on East Drive in Blunsdon, appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, February 7, where he pleaded guilty to all charges. His admission of guilt brought some relief to the victim and her family, who had shown remarkable bravery in coming forward to report the abuse after many years of silence.
Detective Constable James Newbery, a representative of Swindon CID, publicly commended the victim’s courage, emphasizing that her decision to speak out was instrumental in bringing the case to justice. He also highlighted that the passage of time does not diminish the possibility of holding offenders accountable, stating, “This case goes to show that, regardless of the passage of time that has elapsed since the period of offending, the criminal can still be brought to justice.”
He further urged other victims of sexual assault to come forward, assuring them that Wiltshire Police have specially trained officers dedicated to supporting those who have been abused. The police encourage anyone with information or who has been a victim to contact them directly at 101 or to leave anonymous tips via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Support services are also available for victims seeking help.
