RICHARD GILES AND SHOCKING PAEDOPHILIA PLOT IN HOLSWORTHY
A man from Holsworthy has been sentenced to prison after attempting to meet who he believed was a nine-year-old girl for sexual activity, only to be caught by vigilant citizen-led groups.Richard Giles, aged 24, became the subject of an online sting carried out by self-proclaimed paedophile hunters, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction at Exeter Crown Court.
The court heard that Giles had been led to believe he was communicating with a young girl through online platforms.
In reality, the 'girl' was a decoy created by an adult operating on behalf of UK Database, a group known for monitoring and exposing potential offenders.
Giles was lured into this trap after engaging in multiple conversations over the course of several days.
According to the prosecution, Richard Giles initiated contact with the decoy, who explicitly told him she was only nine years old.
Despite this, Giles continued the conversation and, within a day, the exchanges turned sexual in nature.
The court was told that Giles used explicit language to describe the girl’s body and even sent a photograph of a BMW he claimed to own.
The defendant then made arrangements to meet her at his home address in Holsworthy on December 23.
The meeting was interrupted by members of the vigilante group, who confronted Giles at his residence.
They captured video footage of the scene, during which Giles made incriminating confessions.
Police officers arrived shortly after, executing an arrest.
During the search of Giles’s property, officers discovered a pair of children’s knickers.
Giles insisted that these belonged to an ex-girlfriend who was an adult, asserting he had no sexual interest in children.
Giles stated he was not attracted to minors and preferred older women.
However, the court did not find his claims convincing.
His previous background revealed he had been married before to an older woman and had divorced at the age of 19.
At the time of the offences, Giles was reportedly heavily intoxicated and caring for his blind father.
He had previously been involved in a car trading business and had been pursuing studies in prison to improve his qualifications.
Judge Geoffrey Mercer QC addressed Giles directly during the sentencing, stating, "You went to considerable lengths to engage in online conversation with a girl who you believed was nine years old.
The conversation turned to a clear sexual element.
You had a clear sexual interest in her, despite being told she was nine.
You arranged to meet her thinking she was a young girl, and your intentions were clearly sexual.
You were not simply interested in playing Monopoly, as you claimed." The judge explained that although some offenders may have their sentences suspended in similar cases, this was not one of them.
Giles was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender.
Additionally, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next ten years, emphasizing the court’s serious approach to safeguarding vulnerable minors from such predatory behavior.
