MATTHEW CLARKE FROM HOLSWORTHY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN DEVON

Matthew Clarke, a 28-year-old man residing on Bank Lane in Brixham, has been sentenced to four years in prison following his conviction on multiple charges related to sexual misconduct with a minor. The case, which unfolded in Exeter Crown Court, revealed disturbing details about Clarke's manipulative and predatory behavior towards a 14-year-old girl from the Holsworthy area.

According to court proceedings, Clarke initially gained the trust of the young girl, who was only 14 at the time. Over a period of time, he established a relationship with her, often meeting at various hotels around Devon, including locations in Brixham and other parts of the county. The court heard that Clarke used emotional manipulation to maintain control over the girl, claiming he was suffering from depression and suggesting that only she could help him through his struggles.

Clarke communicated with the victim through encrypted chat applications, ensuring their interactions remained secret from her parents and others. During the investigation, police discovered explicit images on Clarke’s phone depicting the girl and him engaged in sexual activity. These images served as concrete evidence of the sexual relationship that Clarke had initiated and maintained with the minor.

It was also revealed that the initial meeting between Clarke and the girl took place at a party where attendees dressed in furry costumes, a gathering that the girl’s parents attended with her. Importantly, the court clarified that there was no sexual element involved in that particular event. However, Clarke’s relationship with the girl quickly turned sexual, and he would go as far as booking hotel rooms at the Premier Inn and other establishments to facilitate their encounters.

As their relationship progressed, Clarke became increasingly demanding, expressing a desire to take photographs and videos of the girl. He would manipulate her emotionally by becoming upset or distressed, using these tactics to pressure her into complying with his wishes. Clarke also warned the girl that if she revealed their relationship, she would face serious trouble, further isolating her and increasing her fear.

The victim eventually confided in a friend about Clarke’s behavior, which led to the authorities becoming involved. Her statement detailed the profound and devastating impact Clarke’s actions had on her, expressing her fear that nothing could undo the harm caused.

Clarke pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a child, one charge of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and three counts of making indecent images. The judge overseeing the case emphasized the gravity of Clarke’s actions, stating, “You embarked on a sexual relationship, a relationship you knew was not only unlawful but you must have appreciated had a potentially devastating impact on the victim. These offences were in part as a result of a degree of grooming.”

Detective Constable Natasha Elliott-Smith, involved in the investigation, praised the bravery of the victim and her family, noting that the victim’s testimony was instrumental in securing the guilty plea. She expressed hope that the sentencing would help provide some measure of closure for those affected.

In addition to the prison sentence, Clarke was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect until further notice. He is also required to register as a sex offender for life. His defense attorney, Mr. Paul Dentith, requested that Clarke be considered for a community order and a sex offender treatment program, highlighting that Clarke has no prior convictions, is remorseful, and suffers from mental health issues.

Overall, this case underscores the ongoing commitment of Devon police to protect vulnerable individuals, thoroughly investigate sexual offenses, and ensure that offenders are held accountable. The authorities hope that this case will serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding minors and supporting victims of sexual abuse.
