A man who repeatedly stabbed his former wife in a frenzied attempt to kill her may be released after serving just five years in prison, causing outrage among the public.
Richard Austin, aged 47, carried out a brutal assault on his ex-partner at his home in Erdington on January 29, 2019.
The attacker, who had a history of abuse towards the victim spanning several years prior to the attack, was sentenced to life imprisonment on August 16, a Friday.
Austin was instructed to serve a minimum of five years behind bars by Birmingham Crown Court for what police described as a 'dangerous and callous attack.' However, he remains potentially eligible for release after this period.
The incident unfolded early in the morning when Austin arranged for a taxi to pick up his wife.
Shortly after 3 am, he called emergency services, requesting an ambulance.
During the call, he unflinchingly explained that he had stabbed the woman multiple times.
When police arrived at the scene, Austin confessed to the crime and claimed he had thrown the knife into a bin.
