RICARDO GARGIULO FROM ORFORD ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE MASSIVE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY COLLECTION IN LIVERPOOL

In September 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Ricardo Gargiulo, a man from Orford, who was found to possess an alarmingly large collection of indecent images of children. The investigation revealed that Gargiulo had accumulated up to 2.9 million such images over a span of five years, with some depicting children as young as nine years old.

On Thursday, September 13, at Liverpool Crown Court, Gargiulo, aged 50, was brought before the judge to face charges related to his possession and creation of indecent images. Despite the severity of the case, he was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment. Instead, the court ordered him to undertake 200 hours of unpaid community work, along with other restrictions and obligations designed to mitigate the risk he poses.

The police raid that uncovered this disturbing material took place on August 4, 2017, at Gargiulo’s residence on Watkin Street in Orford. When officers arrived, he was present at the scene and was promptly arrested. During the search of his home, law enforcement officials seized a laptop and several hard drives, which contained the illicit material. Due to the sheer volume of images—totaling approximately 2.9 million—authorities were unable to analyze every file. Instead, they examined a representative sample, which revealed the presence of 86 Category A images, 57 Category B images, and 1,897 Category C images, along with 118 prohibited cartoon images involving children, including five videos.

Further investigation uncovered that Gargiulo had bookmarked a Russian website known for hosting indecent images of children. This detail underscored the extent of his engagement with such material. During an earlier court hearing, Gargiulo admitted to three counts of making indecent images, possessing indecent images, and possessing prohibited images. Notably, he had no prior criminal convictions.

Judge Gary Woodhall, presiding over the case, sentenced Gargiulo to a 10-month prison term, suspended for two years. The court also mandated that he complete 200 hours of unpaid work, pay a victim surcharge, and adhere to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. Additionally, Gargiulo was ordered to participate in a two-year rehabilitation program, which could involve up to 35 days of activity, and he remains subject to a 10-year notification requirement, meaning he must register with authorities regarding his whereabouts and activities.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Woodhall acknowledged Gargiulo’s intelligence and articulate nature but emphasized his isolated lifestyle. The judge expressed caution regarding the unexamined images, noting that the full extent of the material remains unknown. While Gargiulo claimed that most images were not pornographic or involved adults, the judge highlighted that even a small proportion of indecent images would still constitute a serious offense. The judge concluded that Gargiulo’s collection was extensive and that he posed a significant risk to children, a risk that could be managed through treatment and community supervision.

Finally, the court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of all seized items, aiming to prevent any further dissemination of the illicit material. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of judicial measures to protect vulnerable populations from such heinous crimes.
