RHYS WALKER JAILED FOR EIGHT YEARS IN NEWCASTLE AFTER GROOMING AND RAPE OF 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL
A man identified as Rhys Walker has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl he had groomed online. The incident took place in Newcastle, where Walker, aged 24, engaged in a prolonged period of messaging with the young girl before ultimately forcing her into sexual acts, a court heard during the trial.
Walker, who hails from West Boldon in South Tyneside, initially befriended the teenager through social media platforms.
Over the course of several weeks, he built a relationship with her, during which he sent her explicit images, establishing a disturbing pattern of grooming.
The court was told that after approximately three or four weeks of communication, Walker extended an invitation for the girl to stay at his residence, a gesture that appeared to be caring on the surface but was, in reality, a calculated move to isolate her.
Judge Tim Gittins, presiding over the case, emphasized that Walker was fully aware of the girl’s vulnerability, including her young age and troubled home environment, and exploited these factors for his own predatory purposes.
The judge described Walker’s actions as premeditated, noting that his intent was to get the girl alone in a setting where he could exert control and commit sexual assault.
During the court proceedings, a statement from the victim was read aloud.
She described the profound impact the assault had on her mental health, revealing that she had engaged in self-harming behaviors and suffered from flashbacks and sleep disturbances.
The girl expressed relief that her allegations had been believed and that Walker was now held accountable, stating, “I am relieved people have believed me and I can get closure knowing he can't do this to anyone else.” She added, “I can finally start to move on with my life.” In addition to his prison sentence, Walker is required to register as a sex offender and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
This order restricts his access to internet-enabled devices indefinitely, aiming to prevent further offenses and protect potential victims in the future.
Walker’s residence at Hall Gardens was noted in the proceedings, and the court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such grooming and sexual assault cases are treated in Newcastle.
