SCOTS MOTHER’S RAGE AFTER POLICE FAIL TO BRING PROSECUTION AGAINST CHILD ABUSER WHO ADMITTED NEGLECT

A furious Scottish mother has blasted the justice system after prosecutors dropped charges against her ex-partner – despite doctors confirming her two-week-old baby suffered non-accidental fractures and the father admitting to grabbing the infant’s legs.

The shocking case centres around baby Remi, who was rushed to hospital on Easter Sunday 2024 after his mother and grandmother discovered bruising on both of his legs.

A full medical examination at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital revealed two separate fractures – a left distal tibia fracture and a right distal fibula fracture – injuries which health specialists said were “consistent with blunt force trauma” and “highly unlikely to occur in the normal handling of a child.” Police and social workers immediately launched an investigation.

Remi’s father, Rhys Moss Wykes, admitted to professionals that he had grabbed the newborn’s legs “too tightly” while changing him.

He was later arrested and formally charged under Section 12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937, which covers wilful neglect, ill-treatment or abuse of a child.

Medical evidence obtained in April and June 2024 confirmed the fractures were non-accidental, with experts concluding the injuries were most likely caused by twisting or forceful grabbing.

Stirling Council placed Remi’s name on the official Child Protection Register under the category of “risk of physical abuse.” Despite this, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) wrote to Remi’s mother on 17 July 2024 to confirm that no action would be taken against Wykes.

The letter admitted “the facts disclose a crime,” but claimed prosecution would be “disproportionate to the seriousness of the offence.” The decision has left the boy’s mother outraged.

“My baby was just two weeks old when he suffered fractures to both his legs.

Doctors said it was non-accidental, social work said it was abuse, the police charged him, and he even admitted what he did.

Yet the prosecutors still walked away.

He shows no remorse, he lies to people about what happened, and now I’m left raising my son alone while he escapes justice.” Court documents and social work reports confirm that Wykes is now restricted to supervised contact once per week, with officials deeming the risk he poses to his son as “high and static.” Child protection campaigners have called the decision “a disgrace” and say it highlights ongoing failures in Scotland’s justice system when it comes to protecting children from abuse.

The mother is now urging others to speak out and demand stronger action: “I will not stay silent.

People need to know the truth about what happened to my son, and how the system has failed him.”
