MAN JAILED FOR CONTROLLING AND ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP
A woman whose ex-partner, Rhys Chalmers, made her life hell has told how she can no longer leave the house on her own.
Rhys Chalmers, 46, of Penrhys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, was in a relationship with her when he repeatedly assaulted her, including pouring urine over her and physically abusing her.
The court heard that he caused injuries to her eyes, smashed belongings, and used derogatory language.
Chalmers wouldn't let his partner go anywhere alone and would take her belongings, including her bank cards.
In a victim impact statement, she said she now has to be escorted by her son or mum wherever she goes and cannot trust men again.
Chalmers has three previous convictions for four offences, including causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
He pleaded guilty to one count of controlling and coercive behavior of a physical nature and one of a non-physical nature.
He was sentenced to 25 months in prison and a restraining order for three years.
Judge Lucy Crowther said: "It seems you have been overwhelmed by an unhealthy addiction to alcohol and you do not have an understanding of what a healthy relationship is."
