CONTROLLING MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON EX-PARTNER
On July 7 of the previous year, Jonathan Woods, a controlling individual, severely assaulted his former partner Danielle Hughes outside her mother’s residence in Penrhys, Rhondda. The assault resulted in Hughes being left unrecognisable, unconscious, and covered in blood on the street.
Witnesses heard Woods tell his father, “I’m obviously going to prison.
I don’t know what happened – I just lost it with her.” The next day, Woods, aged 40, was located at his workplace and taken into custody.
During a phone call with his father, he repeated the statement about going to prison after losing control during the incident.
Woods had a history of 29 convictions, including charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, affray, and wounding with intent.
The violence was preceded by Woods following Hughes, with whom he had a 14-year relationship and two children, after a disagreement over their relationship.
He forcibly pulled her into a car, shouting at her during the act, and then approached her mother’s home claiming he had a laptop to deliver, threatening her if she did not come out.
Hughes was later assaulted at a bus stop, suffering fractures to her cheekbone, jaw, nose, and skull, which necessitated a week-long hospital stay.
Initially charged with attempted murder, Woods pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm.
Judge Daniel Williams sentenced him to nine and a half years in prison along with an extended licence period of four years.
Woods showed no remorse during sentencing; on his way to custody, he remarked, “It’s all conspiracy mate, corrupt.” The court highlighted Woods’ violent past and his attempts at controlling Hughes, describing the attack as a terrible act that caused significant physical and mental harm.
He is currently serving his sentence and will be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his term.
