RHYS BURTON AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN HULL
A young woman passionate about ice skating in Hull became the target of a disturbing case involving Rhys Burton, a man who exploited her trusting nature and turned a budding friendship into a serious and inappropriate relationship.Rhys Burton, aged 24 and residing on Kingsley Drive in Willerby, was found to have engaged in unacceptable and illegal sexual activities with a girl who was only 15 years old at the time.
The incidents occurred in 2018, roughly five years prior to his sentencing, which came after a legal process that saw him initially deny but ultimately admit to the allegations.
Details presented during the court proceedings revealed that Burton and the teenage girl first developed a rapport through their shared interest in ice skating in Hull.
According to the prosecution, Michael Greenhalgh, Burton was described as being friendly and engaging, complimenting her during social interactions and casual gatherings held in May 2018.
Over time, Burton’s behavior grew more intimate; he embraced her and eventually kissed her, despite knowing her age.
This led to feelings of upset and distress for the girl, especially after the sexual contact, which she found uncomfortable, the court was told.
Rachel Scott, appearing in mitigation for Burton, noted that he had no prior criminal history.
She emphasized that these events took place nearly five years ago and that Burton not only accepted responsibility but also had shown remorse.
According to Miss Scott, Burton ceased the relationship once he recognized it was inappropriate.
She stated, “He fully accepts his behaviours and he hasn't tried to hide from his behaviour at all.” Scott further explained that Burton believed he was genuinely in love with the girl at the time and thought his feelings were real.
She insisted that the relationship should never have occurred and highlighted that Burton himself understood the foolishness of his actions and the harm caused.
It was also pointed out that the girl was willingly involved, and there was no indication of grooming involved in the case.
Adding context, Scott revealed that Burton started using cocaine at age 16 to cope with his emotional struggles.
She emphasized that he had been working full-time despite his issues, which included substance dependence.
Judge Kate Rayfield addressed the court, underscoring the purpose of the law in shielding young individuals from inappropriate sexual activity.
She remarked that even though the girl initially went along with the activities, she felt uncomfortable and was not fully in control of her situation.
The judge explained, “Young people get into situations that they don't know how to handle or control or how to extricate themselves from and that was exactly what happened to her.
These instances have stayed with her and had an impact on her.” Although Burton eventually ended the relationship, the judge pointed out that the circumstances left a lasting effect on the girl.
She clarified that her decision was influenced by the age difference and the imbalance of power.
As a result of his actions, Rhys Burton received a 22-month prison sentence that was suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to undergo 20 days of rehabilitation and participate in a sex offenders’ treatment program.
Furthermore, Burton was issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and mandated to register as a sex offender for a decade.
This case highlights the importance of legal protections for minors and the ongoing consequences faced by individuals who breach these protections, even if their behaviors are later admitted and recognized as wrong by the offenders themselves.
