REECE WEST SENTENCED IN ROTHERHAM FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE INVOLVING DOG MAC
Reece Kevin Tommy West, born on October 25, 1996, and residing on St John’s Road, Rotherham, was convicted in 2019 of causing unnecessary suffering to a small Chihuahua named Mac. The incident involved severe injuries inflicted on Mac, who had to be euthanized due to the extent of his head trauma. The case revealed that West, who was caring for Mac then, caused non-accidental injuries that resulted in the dog suffering critical head injuries on April 12, 2018.RSPCA Inspector Paula Clemence described the emotional toll of the case, stating, “This was a very upsetting case to deal with. The owner of Mac is devastated – as you’d imagine. She left Mac in West’s care, went to work, and everything seemed fine until she received a distressing call. She was told something was wrong with Mac and needed to return home immediately.”
When she arrived home, she found Mac collapsed, bleeding from his eye and ear, and turning blue. The owner rushed him to a vet, where Mac was given oxygen and examined. The vet diagnosed severe head trauma, leading to the heartbreaking decision to put him to sleep on humane grounds.
Veterinary evidence described Mac’s injuries, noting a large swelling around his left eye, bruising on his ear, and multiple scratches and small abrasions across his body, including his chest, toes, and legs. A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mac had a fractured skull and hemorrhaging in the head and neck, consistent with significant blunt force trauma.
West claimed he believed Mac had fallen downstairs while he was lying in bed and that he woke up later to find Mac crying and collapsed on the bed. However, both vets testified that such injuries were too severe to have resulted from a fall from a small height like a bed, sofa, or even stairs.
Inspector Clemence emphasized the impact of the case, saying, “This incident caused a great deal of suffering to Mac, and his death, as well as an enormous amount of upset to his owner whose grief over what happened goes on.”
In sentencing, Reece West received a 26-week prison sentence, along with orders for costs and charges totaling £915. He is also disqualified from keeping any animals for life. West’s addresses include Coleridge Road, S65 1LG, and Larch Mews, S65 1NQ in Rotherham.
