Hewlett, aged 64, succumbed to throat cancer and was laid to rest in a pauper’s funeral in Germany, where he had been residing at the time of his death.Hewlett’s life was marked by a series of disturbing incidents, including multiple convictions for sexual offenses against young girls. In the years following, Hewlett’s name resurfaced in connection with the high-profile disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann in May 2007 from Praia da Luz, Portugal. Shortly before his death, Hewlett admitted that he had been staying near the resort at the time of her disappearance. He also claimed to have been in the vicinity of Praia da Luz when Madeleine went missing, and he looked similar to images of a suspect seen near her apartment. Despite these claims, Hewlett consistently maintained that he had no involvement in her disappearance.
