RAYMOND FINDLAY, 32, SENTENCED IN HEMEL HEMPSTEAD FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF SCHOOLGIRL
In October 2012, Raymond Findlay, aged 32, of Flatfield Road, Hemel Hempstead, was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl during a sleepover at his home, which was organized by his girlfriend’s teenage daughter.The court heard that Findlay, described as a 'lecherous' man, frequently bought alcohol for his partner’s teenage daughter and her friends when they visited his flat.
On July 23 of the previous year, during one of these gatherings, Findlay, who was intoxicated, put his arm around the girl and forced himself on her by kissing her and touching her breast. The victim managed to break free from him, fleeing from the flat into a nearby street where she flagged down a motorist. Judge John Plumstead commended the motorist, saying, “Any parent whose child was in distress would hope they would fall into such decent and caring hands.” The motorist then took the girl home.
A victim impact statement revealed that the girl struggled emotionally following the assault. It left her feeling nervous, mistrustful, and strained at school, in addition to being torn from her group of friends.
Despite being convicted by a jury on two counts of sexual activity with a child, Findlay refused to accept responsibility for his actions. Judge Plumstead remarked, “You still will not accept responsibility for it – the only thing you may have is a straightforward punishment.” The second count involved another teenage girl during a sleepover in January 2011.
The judge emphasized the breach of trust involved, stating, “Parents let their children go for sleepovers because they expect their children to be cared for and not be subjected to a predatory lunge by a 32-year-old man. It was a selfish, lecherous act from someone who had no proper regard for boundaries between adults and children.”
Findlay was ordered to serve a minimum of three months before possible release on licence. He is also prohibited from having unsupervised contact with children under 16 unless approved by social services and will be on the Sex Offenders Register for seven years.
