OLDHAM MAN RAYMOND CARPENTER CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS AT MANCHESTER'S PICCADILLY STATION

In a startling incident that unfolded in June 2021, Raymond Carpenter, a 40-year-old resident of Oldham, found himself at the center of a sting operation conducted by vigilant paedophile hunters.

Carpenter had arranged to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl at Piccadilly station in Manchester, with intentions that were clearly inappropriate and criminal.

Prior to the planned meeting, Carpenter had engaged in online conversations with the decoy account, which was operated by members of the Elusive Child Protection Unit.

During these exchanges, he sent explicit images of his genitals and exchanged sexualized messages, believing he was communicating with a minor.

The chat included questions about her being 'good' or 'naughty,' and the girl, in reality an adult woman, had claimed to be only 13 years old.

Throughout their conversation, Carpenter's language became increasingly sexual.

He inquired whether she had seen a 'man's bits' and if she had ever 'played with herself.' When he asked if she wanted to see 'under his boxer shorts,' she expressed concern about getting into trouble.

Despite this, Carpenter urged her to delete their chats to keep their interactions secret, and he subsequently sent a photograph of himself holding a snake, claiming it was 'as big as his privates.' Carpenter's intentions became more explicit as he expressed a desire to have sex with the girl, later asking her to wear red knickers because he 'liked' the color.

He also sent a picture of his genitals and made it clear he wanted to meet up for sexual activity, stating he would 'only do dirty things if she wanted to.' The decoy account relayed the details of the planned meeting to other members of the paedophile hunting group.

On July 5, 2021, a group of approximately ten individuals confronted Carpenter at Piccadilly station, with police officers also present to arrest him.

The confrontation was live-streamed on Facebook, where Carpenter, visibly distressed, claimed he 'made a mistake.' The video quickly gained widespread attention, amassing over 250,000 views.

The incident was captured and published by the group, which aimed to expose individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities with minors.

During the court proceedings at Minshull Street Crown Court, it was revealed that Carpenter, a father of four, expressed remorse for his actions.

It was also noted that he had no prior convictions related to sexual offenses.

His solicitor argued that he found himself caught in a trap set by the vigilant group and that his world had been turned upside down by the exposure.

The lawyer emphasized that Carpenter was genuinely sorry and that there was no real victim involved, suggesting that imprisonment might do more harm than good.

However, the judge, Recorder Michael Duck QC, dismissed these pleas, citing the seriousness of the offense.

Carpenter pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child, attempting to incite a child into sexual activity, and arranging or facilitating a child sex offense.

As a result, he was sentenced to two years in prison, a decision underscoring the gravity with which the court viewed his actions and the importance of protecting minors from such predatory behavior.
