RAYMOND BLACKWELL SENTENCED IN OXFORD FOR DECADE OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN BLACKBIRD LEYS

In a case that has shocked the community of Blackbird Leys, Oxford, Raymond Blackwell, aged 56, was sentenced to a total of sixteen years in prison following a prolonged period of sexual abuse spanning over two decades. The court heard that Blackwell, residing at Windrush Towers in Blackbird Leys, had inflicted a reign of terror on young girls, with his crimes finally coming to light after a victim’s heartfelt letter prompted him to surrender to authorities.

Blackwell admitted to police that he had raped and sexually assaulted four girls, all between the ages of nine and 15. His guilty plea covered three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault, which he entered during his appearance at Oxford Crown Court in February. The details of his crimes revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that persisted for more than twenty years.

During the court proceedings, Blackwell’s defense lawyer, Nicholas Syfret, described his client as a man on the verge of a complete moral and mental breakdown. Syfret emphasized Blackwell’s remorse, stating, “His remorse is deep and genuine. Nothing can undo the harm he has done to those children, and he does not ask for mercy, but he does ask for understanding.”

It was also revealed that Blackwell had himself been subjected to abuse during his childhood, with Syfret claiming that he remembered nothing before the age of 16. This background was presented as a possible explanation for his offending, though it did not diminish the severity of his crimes.

Justice Kennedy, presiding over the case, sentenced Blackwell to ten years for the rapes and an additional six years for the indecent assaults, with both sentences to run concurrently. The judge acknowledged Blackwell’s awareness of the wrongfulness of his actions, stating, “You know the wrong you have done. That you repent it, I have no doubt at all.”

He further remarked on the circumstances that may have contributed to Blackwell’s offending, but emphasized that he was not a young man when he began his criminal activities. “For more than 20 years, you were either committing persistent rape or gross indecent assault on four girls,” Justice Kennedy declared.

Upon release from prison, Blackwell will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, a measure designed to protect the community from further harm.
