RAYMOND AND SARAH-LOUISE CARMODY FROM LAZENBY CONVICTED OVER ELDERLY DOG'S SUFFERING IN MIDDLESBROUGH

Raymond Carmody, born around 1949, and Sarah-Louise Carmody, born approximately in 1970, residents of Pasture Lane in Lazenby, Middlesbrough, have been found guilty of neglecting their elderly Staffordshire bull terrier, Jack. The court heard that the couple failed to provide necessary medical treatment for their dog, who was suffering from a severe tumour, leading to unnecessary pain and distress.

In June 2017, Jack developed a large ulcerated tumour on his right foot. The growth was so severe that it caused him significant pain and rendered him unable to walk. Despite the evident deterioration, the Carmodys chose not to seek veterinary assistance for their aging pet. Instead, they relied on bandaging the wound themselves, a decision that was driven by their financial difficulties following the repossession of their flat. The court was informed that the couple could not afford professional medical care, which contributed to the worsening condition of Jack.

For two months, the tumour continued to grow, and Jack's suffering was left untreated. The court heard that the couple's neglect was a conscious choice, motivated by their inability to pay for veterinary services. The defence solicitor described the incident as a “blip,” asserting that the dog was otherwise healthy, well-fed, and regularly exercised. However, this characterization did little to mitigate the severity of their neglect.

At one point, the Carmodys requested that Jack be returned to them so he could spend his final days at home. Their request was ultimately denied, and Jack remains in the care of the RSPCA. Representatives from the animal charity described the case as “sad,” emphasizing that it is uncommon for the RSPCA to prosecute individuals facing financial hardship. They explained that Mr. Carmody was unaware of the gravity of his actions, stating, “Mr. Carmody didn’t realise he had done anything wrong.”

The court sentenced the Carmodys to a deprivation order, which involves removing the dog from their care to prevent further suffering. No additional details about the case or the specific terms of the order were provided. This case highlights the tragic consequences of neglect driven by financial hardship and underscores the importance of timely veterinary intervention for vulnerable animals.
