SEX OFFENDER ORDERED TO PAY LEGAL FEES AFTER 'HOPELESS' BID TO AVOID DEPORTATION
Ravi Paramalingam, who has been linked to Cardiff and is a father of three, was found guilty of two sexual offences as well as one count of trespassing with intent to commit sex crimes. He received a four-year prison sentence.
Having entered the UK secretly in 1999, he was initially refused political asylum.
Despite receiving indefinite leave to remain in 2011 after a period of illegal employment and accumulating 24 convictions, including serious sexual offences, he was ordered to be deported following his conviction at Cardiff Crown Court three years earlier.
Judge Karen Walden-Smith rejected his request for a judicial review, describing his appeal as 'hopeless' and stating that deportation to Sri Lanka was in the interest of public safety.
The judge also ordered him to pay nearly £1,000 in legal costs, acknowledging that his legal challenge was an abuse of process and lacked financial merit, although she based her ruling on the principle since he had no funds.
The legal case centered around his attempt to prevent deportation on human rights grounds, citing family ties, but this argument was ultimately dismissed as without merit.
