RACHAEL THOMPSON FROM PLYMOUTH CHARGED WITH BRUTAL ATTACK ON BABY SON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Plymouth, a mother named Rachael Thompson, aged 40, has been found guilty of inflicting severe injuries on her four-month-old son.The incident, which took place in September 2011, involved Thompson deliberately slashing her infant's feet with a razor blade, resulting in what medical professionals described as 'horrific' wounds.
According to court proceedings, Thompson caused these injuries by running a razor blade against her child's heels.
Following the assault, she attempted to deceive hospital staff by claiming that her son had either kicked or cut himself on a fallen razor while in the bath.
However, the medical team quickly became suspicious of her account.
When the child was brought to the hospital two days after the injuries were first noticed, doctors observed the wounds and recognized that they could not have been caused by an accidental fall or mishap.
Emma Congdon, an A&E nurse at the hospital, testified that she found the injuries to be particularly suspicious, especially given the delay in seeking medical attention.
She emphasized that it was unlikely for a four-month-old baby to be left alone in the bath, raising questions about the circumstances of the injuries.
The examination revealed that the child had two identical wounds on each heel, which further suggested deliberate harm rather than an accidental injury.
Prosecutor Jo Martin explained that police consulted with an expert who indicated that a falling razor would be unlikely to produce such precise, symmetrical cuts.
The expert also noted that if a razor had caused the injuries, the wounds would likely have been in a criss-cross pattern rather than identical, clean cuts on both heels.
These findings pointed strongly to intentional infliction of harm.
Following the incident, the young boy was hospitalized overnight before being discharged.
Thompson was subsequently arrested and questioned by authorities.
During her interview, she maintained that she did not intend to hurt her child and insisted she loved him.
Despite her claims, the evidence presented in court was compelling enough to convict her of assaulting her son between September 14 and September 18, 2011.
Thompson has a documented history of mental health issues, including a personality disorder stemming from childhood abuse and bullying at school.
She also suffers from bulimia, a serious eating disorder she has battled for most of her adult life.
Her family situation remains unchanged, with the child still residing in Plymouth with Thompson and her partner, Trevor Parkins.
The couple has another son, aged 15 months.
Thompson was released on bail following her conviction and is scheduled for sentencing on November 7.
The case has raised concerns about child safety and the importance of vigilant medical and social intervention in cases of suspected abuse.
