PHILLIP JOHNSON SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN COLCHESTER AND BEYOND
In a significant case that has spanned over three decades, Phillip Johnson, a 65-year-old man from Colchester, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses involving young boys across the country. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that began in the late 1980s and continued into the 2000s, highlighting the persistent and predatory nature of Johnson's crimes.
Johnson’s offending history dates back to 1988 when he first sexually assaulted two young boys aged between six and eight in Kent.
These assaults occurred over a period of two years before ceasing in the late 1980s, a period during which Johnson left the area for a significant amount of time.
Despite the break, the abuse resumed when the victims were teenagers, aged 15 and 16, indicating a troubling escalation and persistence in his offending behavior.
In 2008, Johnson relocated to the Humberside region, where he continued his predatory actions by befriending and grooming a teenage boy, ultimately sexually assaulting him.
The victim struggled with the trauma and did not disclose the abuse for nearly ten years, finally revealing it to the police.
This revelation prompted further investigation into Johnson’s activities.
Following the police inquiry, Johnson moved to Colchester, where he engaged in grooming and sexually abusing two more young males.
One of these victims kept the abuse secret for a year, until the second victim encouraged him to come forward and seek justice.
The police arrested Johnson in August 2018 as part of an extensive investigation into his alleged crimes spanning over 30 years.
During police interviews, Johnson denied any wrongdoing.
However, the investigation uncovered approximately 2,000 indecent images of children on his devices, including some of the most severe Category A images depicting serious child sexual abuse.
These findings significantly contributed to the case against him.
Johnson faced multiple charges, including 21 counts related to sexual abuse and the production of indecent images of children.
He denied 13 counts of sexual assault, which included attempted buggery, and 8 counts of making indecent images.
Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty of all charges in July at Chelmsford Crown Court.
The judge described Johnson as a dangerous offender and sentenced him to 24 years in prison, with a minimum of 15 years before he can be considered for parole.
Additionally, Johnson will be subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life.
The case was praised by specialist officers for the bravery of the five men who came forward to report their abuse, demonstrating remarkable courage in seeking justice against a man who had inflicted profound harm on them during their childhoods.
