PHILIP WRIGHT SENTENCED IN BARNSEY FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST UNDERAGE GIRL
In a significant case that has shocked the community of Barnsley, Philip Wright, aged 37, of South Drive, Bolton-upon-Dearne, was handed an eight-year prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences involving a minor.The conviction was announced at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, 15 April, following a comprehensive five-day trial that concluded in March.
Wright’s criminal actions came to light after he initiated contact with a young girl from the Bolton-upon-Dearne area of Barnsley through social media platform Facebook in April 2014.
At the time, the girl was only 15 years old.
Over the course of their online interactions, Wright began sending her sexually explicit messages, which quickly escalated in nature.
He managed to persuade her to meet him in person, and during these meetings, he exerted pressure on her to engage in sexual activity.
The young girl and Wright met on several occasions over the following months, during which he continued to manipulate and exploit her vulnerability.
The situation was brought to the attention of authorities in September 2014 when the girl’s mother discovered a phone bill amounting to £500.
Upon inspecting her daughter’s phone, she found explicit messages from Wright on Facebook, which confirmed her suspicions of inappropriate contact.
Following this discovery, police swiftly intervened.
Wright was arrested and initially faced charges of two counts of sexual activity with a child.
The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior, leading to his conviction on seven counts of sexual activity with a minor under 16.
The court heard how Wright’s actions had caused significant emotional trauma to the young victim.
Detective Constable Helen Swift, who led the investigation, described Wright as a “cold and calculated individual” who preyed on a vulnerable young girl.
She emphasized the emotional toll of the case, stating, “He preyed on a young girl who was vulnerable due to her age and took advantage of her.
By putting her through the traumatic process of reliving what happened in court, he has caused her further distress and anxiety.” Detective Swift also praised the resilience of the victim and her family, acknowledging their strength and dignity throughout the ordeal.
As part of his sentence, Wright was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting young people from exploitation.
