PHILIP SHIELD FROM GATESHEAD SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS FOR CHILD RAPE IN SHOCKING CASE

In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Gateshead, Philip Shield, aged 68, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 21 years after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes involving child abuse.

The court heard how Shield, a known offender with a disturbing history, was responsible for the sexual assault of a young schoolboy, an act that has left deep scars on the victim's life.

Shield’s criminal record includes a previous nine-year sentence handed down in 2010 for offences against three minors, highlighting a troubling pattern of predatory behavior.

Despite his prior conviction, Shield continued to exhibit a disturbing desire to abuse boys, which culminated in the recent conviction following a trial where he denied all charges.

The court was presented with evidence of his guilt in relation to charges of rape, indecent assault, and indecency with a child.

During the sentencing hearing, the court was shown a statement from the latest victim, who bravely came forward to recount the trauma inflicted by Shield.

The victim expressed a profound sense of insecurity and fear, stating, “I never feel safe.

I don’t know if I will ever feel safe again.

You have not only destroyed a boy back then but you have also damaged a man forever.

I am not the man I could have been.” Judge Julie Clemitson, presiding over the case, sentenced Shield to 21 years in prison, with an additional extended licence period of one year.

The judge also mandated that Shield must register as a sex offender and comply with a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.

Addressing Shield’s psychological profile, Judge Clemitson remarked that he appears to have a “very strong desire to abuse boys,” emphasizing the severity of his predatory tendencies.

The judge highlighted the profound psychological harm inflicted on the latest victim, noting that the abuse had caused “severe” mental health issues and adversely affected many aspects of his life.

The case underscores the ongoing danger posed by Shield, whose actions have had lasting and devastating consequences for his victims.

Looking back to May 2010, Shield was previously sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing three young boys in Haltwhistle.

At that time, he was residing at Woodhead Park.

The court heard how Shield subjected each of his victims to years of torment, often threatening them with violence if they disclosed the abuse.

One victim recounted how Shield threatened to “wring his neck” if he told anyone, a threat that the victim believed.

During the 2010 trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Shield admitted to the offences when questioned by police.

However, he claimed he could not explain why he had engaged in such behavior and expressed a desire to stop abusing children.

The case also revealed that two other victims had come forward, alleging that Shield had abused them approximately 30 years earlier under similar circumstances.

These allegations were initially denied by Shield, who claimed he had not been in contact with the boys during the alleged period, but police investigations confirmed otherwise.

Shield’s defense lawyer, Sarah Mallett, argued that her client was a man of previously good character with no prior criminal record.

She requested that the court consider his guilty pleas and the remorse he expressed, emphasizing that Shield was deeply ashamed and regretted his actions.

The defense also pointed out the significant gap of nearly 30 years between the two sets of offences, suggesting a low risk of re-offending if similar circumstances did not recur.

In sentencing, Recorder David Hodson acknowledged Shield’s guilty pleas, which spared the victims from having to testify, and sentenced him to three years for each set of offences.

The sentences for the older offences were ordered to run concurrently, resulting in a total of six years.

The 353 days Shield had already spent in custody were deducted from this total.

Following the court proceedings, a relative of one of the victims expressed their outrage, stating, “He has ruined so many lives with what he’s done.

Our family has gone through hell and back and six years in prison just isn’t sufficient justice.” The case remains a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by individuals like Shield and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children.
