PHILIP JOYCE FROM BOLTON AND FARNWORTH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL IN CUMBRIA

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Bolton, Farnworth, and the wider Cumbria region, Philip Joyce, aged 60, was sentenced to serve two and a half years in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting a young girl. The incident, which took place in west Cumbria, has brought to light serious concerns about child safety and the importance of safeguarding measures.

Joyce, who currently resides in Farnworth, Bolton, was found guilty of three separate charges related to sexual activity with the young girl. Despite the conviction, he maintained his innocence during the sentencing hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, where he appeared to deny any wrongdoing. The court proceedings revealed that after the abuse, Joyce instructed the girl not to disclose what had happened, a common tactic used by offenders to silence victims and avoid detection.

However, the girl chose to confide in her mother, a decision that the judge acknowledged as potentially life-saving. The judge noted that her decision to speak out might have prevented further, more severe abuse. The court heard that the girl’s bravery in reporting the incident played a crucial role in bringing Joyce to justice.

During the hearing, defence barrister Greg Hoare argued that there was no evidence suggesting Joyce had molested any other children. He emphasized that Joyce was well-regarded by those who knew him and described the offences as out of character for him. Despite these character references, the judge, Peter Hughes QC, stated that the conviction was based on “compelling” evidence presented during the trial.

As part of his sentence, Joyce was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his contact with children moving forward. Additionally, he was disqualified from ever living or working with minors, reflecting the court’s serious stance on protecting vulnerable children from potential harm.
