PHILIP GREEN FROM BROMYARD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON YOUNG GIRL

In June 2012, a man from Bromyard named Philip Green was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl. The victim, who was between the ages of seven and nine at the time, had accused Green of abuse, leading to a trial where he was ultimately found guilty despite denying the charges.

During the proceedings at Worcester Crown Court, Green’s defense attorney, Stephen Dyer, highlighted Green’s significant cognitive limitations, describing him as being “almost a child” in terms of literacy and comprehension. Dyer explained that Green’s understanding was extremely limited, comparable to that of a primary school student. Green, aged 59 at the time, had previously worked as a chicken catcher at a poultry farm until he suffered a heart attack approximately 15 years prior, after which he had not been employed.

Mr. Dyer also emphasized that Green did not have a predatory intent towards young girls. Instead, he often allowed friends and acquaintances who were experiencing difficulties or homelessness to stay at his residence on Awbrey Way, Bromyard. The young girl involved in the case was connected to one of these friends, who had stayed with Green.

Judge Robert Juckes addressed the court, noting that Green had a history of being tried for offenses involving young girls. Green had previously received a five-year prison sentence in November 2008 for crimes committed against two girls under the age of 16, with those offenses occurring before 2001. The victims had come forward with their complaints in 2007, which led to Green’s arrest. Interestingly, these earlier charges overlapped with the current case, as Green had already begun committing new offenses against the younger girl at the time of his arrest.

Green was sentenced to 30 months for each of the two sexual assault charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. This resulted in a total prison term of two and a half years, from which 144 days already spent in custody were deducted. Additionally, Green was ordered to be permanently barred from working with children and was required to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.
