PHILIP COLES BODMIN PAEDOPHILE CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

A disturbing case involving the possession and distribution of indecent images of children has come to light, with court proceedings revealing the extent of Philip Coles' activities. Coles, a 51-year-old resident of Lanlivery near Bodmin, was identified and apprehended after Devon and Cornwall Police acted on intelligence received from a peer-to-peer download website. The authorities traced the online activity back to Coles, leading to his arrest at his home in October 2022.

During a thorough search of his electronic devices, law enforcement officials discovered a staggering collection of digital material. The investigation uncovered approximately 1,326 category C indecent images of children, some depicting minors as young as 10 and 14 years old. In addition, there were 28,617 other images classified as category C that were securely locked and inaccessible without proper authorization. All these images were meticulously organized into folders with disturbing titles such as 'jail bait', 'pre-teens', 'nymphets', and 'Lolita'.

Police examinations revealed that the accessible images contained sexually explicit content involving young children, often posed in a manner that suggested exploitation. Coles appeared before magistrates earlier this year, where he pleaded guilty to two charges: possession of indecent photographs of children with intent to show or distribute, and making such photographs.

At a sentencing hearing held at Truro Crown Court on Friday, October 4, Ryan Murray, representing Coles, provided mitigation. He explained that Coles had initially used the peer-to-peer platform to download legal content, including adult pornography. It was only when unzipping the downloaded files that Coles realized he had inadvertently acquired indecent images of children, due to the sheer volume of material he was handling.

Mr. Murray emphasized that Coles was not actively seeking images of children and highlighted his previously good character and strong work ethic. He suggested that Coles had been subjected to a gradual process of desensitization, which contributed to his actions.

Despite these arguments, His Honour Judge Simon Carr sentenced Coles to six months in prison, suspended for two years. The judge warned Coles that he must confront and address his sexual interest in children, or risk continuing to pose a danger to minors. The judge stated, “You pleaded guilty to downloading category C images of children on an industrial scale. You don’t have 30,000 images of children if you don’t have a sexual interest in children. You need to address that.”

In addition to the suspended sentence, Coles was ordered to undertake 30 days of rehabilitation activities, complete 100 hours of unpaid work, and pay £1,600 towards court costs. Furthermore, a five-year sexual harm prevention order was imposed, and Coles was placed on the sex offenders register, marking a serious step in the ongoing effort to monitor and prevent further offenses.
