PETULA MYERS IN COURT AFTER BOMBARDING HER EX'S NEW PARTNER WITH MORE THAN 500 PHONE CALLS
A woman bombarded her ex’s new partner with hundreds of phone calls, a court heard.Petula Myers harrassed Huddersfield woman Michelle James over a period of nine months.
The 44-year-old appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
She admitted harassing Ms James between May 23 last year and February 8 this year.
Myers also pleaded guilty to persistently using a public electronic communications network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety.
Ben Crosland, prosecuting, said that Ms James called police to report that she had been receiving a large volume of calls from a withheld number.
She suspected that it was Myers, the former partner of a man she had also dated.
Mr Crosland said: “She received between 50 and 100 calls on a daily basis.
“Some of the calls she answered and stated that the caller made verbal threats to her.” Police made enquiries and Myers, of Fairbourne Road in Manchester, was identified as the owner of the phone used to make the calls.
Mr Crosland said: “A total of 519 calls were identified as being made from the defendant’s mobile to the defendant.” Zara Begum, mitigating, said that her client had an initial confrontation with Ms James which led to the subsequent phone calls.
She told magistrates: “She (Myers) was in a relationship with a male and subsequently this ended.
“A number was left for her and she believed this to be his number when she spoke to a female who identified herself as the male’s girlfriend.
“This started an exchange of communication between the defendant and the complainant.” Miss Begum said that Myers had also received a number of phone calls from withheld numbers.
She said: “Derogatory remarks were made to her and she’s acted in retaliation and called back.” Magistrates ordered Myers to complete 40 hours of unpaid work.
She must also pay £40 costs and £60 victim surcharge and not contact Ms James for 12 months.
