PETER TONER AND HIS SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN AYRSHIRE AND LARGS

A former educator has been handed a decade-long prison sentence after being convicted of serious child abuse crimes. Peter Toner, aged 61, was declared guilty by the High Court in Glasgow of engaging in sexual abuse against five young children during the years 1979 to 1983. At that time, he served as a house master at the now-defunct St Columba’s College, located in Largs, Ayrshire.

The case came to light following an investigation initiated by officers from the Ayrshire Divisional Rape Investigation Unit. Authorities began their enquiries in October 2016 after receiving a formal complaint from a victim who had suffered abuse at the hands of Toner. As the investigation progressed, detectives uncovered additional victims, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years.

Detective Constable Colin Jones, who led the investigation, stated publicly, “Peter Toner exploited his authority and position of trust to commit these heinous crimes. Such betrayal of trust compounds the severity of his offenses.” He also emphasized the importance of victims coming forward, remarking, “It takes an enormous amount of courage for individuals to speak out about such abuse. I want to acknowledge the bravery of all those who have shared their stories.”

The detective constable expressed a hope that the lengthy sentence would provide some measure of justice for the victims, though he acknowledged that no punishment can truly undo the profound and lasting trauma inflicted. He further encouraged anyone who has experienced abuse at the hands of a sexual predator to contact police authorities, reassuring potential victims that it is never too late to seek help and report such crimes. Police Scotland has committed to supporting all victims and ensuring they receive the appropriate help and justice they deserve.
