PETER SMITH AND HIS CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE REVEALED

A previously convicted sex offender, Peter Smith, has been sentenced to serve additional time behind bars after his attempts to conceal his activities and breach monitoring regulations were uncovered.

Smith, who had a history of violent and sexual crimes, was initially imprisoned in 2012 for attempting to abduct two women within a span of three months, each incident involving the offender armed with a knife.

One of these women was sexually assaulted during the encounter.

Following his release, Smith was placed on the sex offender register, a legal requirement that mandates individuals with such convictions to regularly inform authorities of their personal details.

This process aims to facilitate ongoing monitoring to prevent further offenses.

Despite these obligations, Smith's recent actions have demonstrated a blatant disregard for his responsibilities.

On March 15 of this year, authorities from Northamptonshire Police visited Smith’s residence on Braybrooke Road, Desborough, as part of routine compliance checks.

During the visit, investigators discovered that Smith had engaged in deceptive online activity, creating a fictional identity under the name Alex, claiming to be a single mother seeking an au pair.

He had set up a profile on aupair.com, which he used to communicate with potential targets.

Additionally, Smith had transferred these conversations to WhatsApp, where he continued to pose as a woman, further attempting to conceal his true identity.

His online deception extended further through the creation of a Facebook profile under the alias Liam Smith.

Importantly, he failed to notify the authorities of this username, breaching the mandatory registration requirements that accompany his status as a registered sex offender.

This month, Smith faced justice in a magistrates’ court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to comply with registration obligations.

As a result, he was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.

The court also imposed additional penalties, including a financial order requiring Smith to pay £85 in costs and a surcharge of £187 directed toward victim support services.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police commented on the case, emphasizing their commitment to strict monitoring of sex offenders.

“Registered sex offenders are very closely monitored by our management of sexual or violent offenders team (MOSOVO),” the police representative stated.

“This entails regular, unannounced visits to their homes to confirm they are adhering to all conditions.

If violations occur, we act decisively and do not offer second chances.

Our dedicated team works tirelessly each day to ensure these offenders are supervised rigorously, and we respond swiftly to any breaches.” The police spokesperson further issued a warning to other offenders, asserting, “This case should serve as a clear warning that our processes are thorough and effective.

We will track you down, and non-compliance will result in imprisonment.” It is important to note that individuals convicted as sex offenders are required to register with police for a period determined by their sentence.

The registration includes providing personal details such as their name, aliases, address, bank information, passport details, and whether they are living with a child.

They are also obligated to renew their registration annually.

Failure to comply can lead to severe penalties, including a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
