PETER ROBERTS FROM LIVERPOOL JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN BILSTON
In a case that has spanned over three decades, justice has finally been served for a young girl who was subjected to sexual assault by a former teacher, Peter Roberts.The incident, which took place in the 1980s, has come to light only recently, leading to Roberts's conviction and imprisonment.
Peter Roberts, who once taught at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Primary School in Bilston, developed a disturbing pattern of grooming and abusing a young pupil.
According to court proceedings, Roberts not only befriended the girl but also cultivated a close relationship with her family.
Evidence revealed that he went as far as accompanying them on holidays, and engaging in activities such as taking their children to football matches and swimming sessions.
These outings provided him with opportunities to manipulate and groom the girl, as described by prosecutor Mr.
Andrew Baker.
Roberts began his teaching career at Holy Trinity in 1976.
It was during the 1980s that his infatuation with the girl turned into abusive behavior.
Court documents detailed how he started touching her while reading stories in her bedroom, a clear breach of trust and a violation of her innocence.
Mr.
Baker emphasized that the touching was not an isolated incident but became a regular occurrence, especially on weekends.
The abuse was carried out by someone who was supposed to be a trusted educator and a family friend, making the betrayal even more profound.
Living in Bilston at the time, Roberts continued his pattern of assault until the girl, eventually summoning the courage, told him to stop.
This plea temporarily halted the abuse, but Roberts maintained his friendly relationship with the family until they moved away from the area two years later.
The girl first confided in her family about the abuse in 1999, but she was reluctant to pursue the matter further at that time.
It was only many years later, when police investigated allegations made by another individual, that she finally disclosed the full extent of her suffering to authorities.
Now aged 70 and residing in Liverpool, Roberts initially denied the allegations but later admitted to the charges.
He was living on Forthlin Road, Liverpool, and was described as a man of previously good character.
During the court proceedings, Roberts pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault.
Judge James Burbidge QC sentenced him to three years in prison, addressing him directly in court.
The judge remarked, “You have lived for many years with a dark secret.
Unfortunately, the injured party had to live with it as well and it adversely affected her life, her relationships, and her overall well-being.
Her bedroom should have been a safe place for her.” This case highlights the long-lasting impact of abuse and the importance of justice, even when many years have passed since the crimes occurred.
