PETER REYNOLDS GROOMS TEENAGER IN HARROGATE AND RUGBY AND IS SENTENCED IN WARWICK CROWN COURT

In April 2016, a disturbing case of online grooming and sexual abuse culminated in the sentencing of Peter Reynolds, a man with connections to Harrogate and later residing in Westway, London. Reynolds, aged 50 at the time, was convicted of a series of serious offenses involving a 15-year-old girl from Rugby, Warwickshire.

Reynolds had traveled from his home in Yorkshire to Rugby, where he engaged in a disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct against the young victim. The case revealed that Reynolds had initially established contact with the girl through a chat website in May 2013. During their first interaction, which lasted approximately two hours, Reynolds used the alias 'Paul' and kept his face hidden in any images or videos shared. The girl found him to be 'a very nice person,' and their communication quickly escalated to daily text messages and online chats. She described Reynolds as 'really kind and supportive,' which fostered a sense of obligation and trust in her.

However, as their online relationship progressed, Reynolds' demeanor shifted. He became increasingly insistent on meeting in person, pestering the girl for about a month before she finally agreed to a face-to-face encounter. Reynolds drove to Rugby to meet her, but the girl initially wanted to back out and be taken home. Instead, Reynolds drove her elsewhere and subjected her to sexual abuse. The girl did not report the incident immediately, but in October, she confided in someone about what had happened. This prompted her to contact Reynolds via Facebook, where she sent him a message. Reynolds responded with a phone call, which she then passed on to the police.

Following this, law enforcement officials traced Reynolds to an address in Stockton-on-Tees, where he was subsequently arrested. During the investigation, police seized Reynolds' computer, discovering indecent images of children as young as six months old. Reynolds was charged with multiple offenses, including the rape of a child under 16, inciting the girl to engage in sexual activity, and six counts of sexual assault. He also pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

At Warwick Crown Court, Reynolds admitted to all charges. The victim, a young girl, read out her own victim impact statement, expressing her devastation and anger. She stated, “What happened to me has devastated my life. I feel really angry towards this man. I’ll never forgive him. I want him to feel guilty for what he did every single day.”

Reynolds' defense lawyer, Matthew Barnes, acknowledged his client’s remorse, stating, “I can inform the court, and her, that he does. Mr Reynolds took full responsibility for his actions by putting in guilty pleas. He is resigned to his fate.”

Judge Gareth Evans QC sentenced Reynolds to ten years in prison. The judge emphasized the severity of the grooming process, noting, “It’s clear to me that, albeit she contacted you, you were very much the person who was in charge of what went on. You were grooming her from the very beginning. She was vulnerable because of her age. In many ways, you have ruined her future.”

Furthermore, Reynolds was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
