PETER PASKNEAL SENTENCED IN OXFORD FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN

In a case that has shocked the community of Oxford, Peter Paskneal, a resident of Rectory Road, East Oxford, was sentenced to more than four years in prison following his conviction for serious sexual offenses involving two young children. The incident, which took place in May 2008, involved Paskneal engaging in inappropriate sexual acts with both a boy and a girl, actions that have left lasting scars on the victims and their families.

Oxford Crown Court heard detailed testimony from the prosecution, led by Kate Mallison, who revealed that Paskneal, aged 52 at the time, had performed sexual acts on the children. During the trial, it was disclosed that Paskneal had told a psychiatrist that the boy had supposedly initiated the activity. However, the court was presented with evidence contradicting this claim, including DNA analysis that confirmed Paskneal’s involvement. His DNA was found in the underwear of both children, establishing a clear link to the offenses.

One of the victims’ mothers provided a heartbreaking account of her child's changed behavior since the assault. She stated, “Her behaviour has changed since that awful day. Sometimes she screams out in her sleep at night. She is very paranoid about the doors and windows being locked. She said she is scared in case someone comes in and gets her while she is asleep.” These emotional testimonies underscored the profound impact the crimes have had on the young victims.

Paskneal, who is also known by the alias Eric, pleaded guilty to two charges of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. His defense lawyer, Stephen Parker, expressed remorse on his behalf, stating, “He is remorseful for his behaviour. He says he hopes it has not psychologically affected the children.” Despite this, the court recognized the severity of the crimes and the lasting damage inflicted.

Judge Patrick Eccles delivered the sentence, which included a prison term of four and a half years. Additionally, Paskneal was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, a measure that underscores the seriousness of his offenses. The judge also imposed restrictions on Paskneal’s future conduct, banning him from working with children or being alone with them without supervision.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Eccles emphasized the emotional toll on the victims and their families, stating, “There is evidence from their victim impact statements that they are emotionally damaged at the moment and that is your responsibility. It is no surprise that their parents feel hurt, disgust and anger.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of such crimes and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children in the community of Oxford.
