PETER O’TOOLE, FORMER GRENADIER GUARD, JAILED IN MAIDSTONE FOR IMAGE OF CHILD ABUSE
In December 2013, Peter O’Toole, a 57-year-old former Grenadier Guard residing on Wyatt Street in Maidstone, was sentenced to six months in jail after admitting to downloading over 3,000 images of child abuse. The images ranged from the lowest to the highest severity levels, with some being particularly cruel.
Maidstone Crown Court heard that police officers attended O’Toole’s home in October 2012, seizing his computer equipment.
They recovered a total of 3,255 images from his devices.
O’Toole admitted to searching for these images, claiming that he had deleted them after viewing.
Representing O’Toole, defense solicitor Alexia Zimbler stated, “O’Toole, who admitted six charges of making indecent images of children, was prepared to go into custody and has shown willingness to learn from this behavior and prevent it from recurring.” She argued that a suspended sentence could be appropriate to allow for rehabilitative support.
However, Judge Charles Byers emphasized the severity of the offenses, remarking, “This is an overwhelming number of images, some of which are particularly cruel.
The court faces the difficult task of weighing your service record and good character against the serious harm inflicted on children for these images to be produced and viewed.
“I’ve seen some of these disturbing images myself, and it is distressing to see children conditioned for sexual gratification of adults.
This is a matter the courts treat very seriously because it involves genuine victims of abuse.” The judge acknowledged O’Toole’s guilty plea and efforts to address his behavior, stating, “I am reducing the sentence due to your attempt to put your affairs in order and your strong personal mitigation.” As part of his sentence, O’Toole was subject to a sexual offences prevention order, and his name will be added to the sex offenders’ register.
