BATH MAN PETER GEORGE CAUGHT IN CHILD PORN SCANDAL INVOLVING INTERNET CHAT ROOMS AND DEPRAVED IMAGES

In December 2009, a significant case involving a resident of Bath, Peter George, unfolded in the courts, revealing disturbing details of online child exploitation. The 64-year-old, who resided on Lansdown Road and was employed as a manager at the Genesis Furniture Project in Oldfield Park, was found to have engaged in highly inappropriate and illegal activities involving the exploitation of children through the internet.

George's misconduct was uncovered when Metropolitan Police officers, investigating the distribution and possession of indecent images of children, traced him to his office in Bath. Their investigation revealed that George had been operating under the alias 'Angela,' a persona he used to communicate with individuals claiming to be paedophiles in online chat rooms. During these interactions, he downloaded a total of 374 indecent images of children over a span of six years, a revelation that shocked those involved in the case.

At Bristol Crown Court, Peter George pleaded guilty to 15 charges related to the making of indecent photographs of children. The court was informed that he could have faced a custodial sentence; however, the sentencing was deferred to allow for an assessment of his suitability for a sex offenders' treatment program. The court also heard that George had stepped down from his role at the charity, though a letter of support from his employer was submitted as part of the proceedings.

During the hearing, George was supported by his wife, who sat in the public gallery. Judge Michael Longman sentenced him to a three-year community order, which included a requirement to complete an internet sex offenders' treatment program. Additionally, George was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years and to pay £275 towards prosecution costs.

In his remarks, Judge Longman described George's actions as deviant and repulsive, emphasizing the gravity of his conduct. The judge expressed concern over the duration of George's offending, noting that his behavior persisted over several years and involved engaging in online chat rooms with individuals posing as paedophiles, while pretending to be himself. The judge highlighted that such behavior is likely to be viewed as deeply disturbing by the general public.

The court also learned that George had engaged in graphic discussions about abusing young girls and had received 250 indecent images of children aged between three and 14. His barrister, Andrew Banks, explained that George's offending occurred during a period when he was experiencing personal difficulties, particularly with his relationships. Mr. Banks stated that George had been honest with his wife and family about his actions and was now in a better position to understand his motivations and seek help.

As the proceedings concluded, George, dressed in a smart double-breasted grey suit, left the court hand in hand with his wife, marking the end of a troubling chapter in his life. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.
