PETER FOSTER FROM BURSTWICK SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN EAST YORKSHIRE

In August 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Peter Foster, a 57-year-old man from Burstwick, East Yorkshire, who was found to have engaged in heinous acts of child sexual abuse through digital means. Foster's criminal activities came to light after police investigations uncovered a significant collection of illegal images and videos stored on multiple devices, including his iPhone.

Authorities from Humberside Police's internet sex offences team executed a search warrant at Foster’s residence on Meadow Drive, Burstwick, on August 31, 2018. This operation was initiated based on intelligence indicating that an IP address associated with his home had downloaded numerous illicit images of children via a file-sharing service. During the search, law enforcement officers seized a variety of electronic devices, such as laptops, a tablet, and a mobile phone, which were later subjected to detailed forensic analysis.

Examination of Foster’s iPhone revealed the presence of two indecent images of children and two extreme pornographic images. More alarmingly, investigators discovered a note on the device, which appeared to be an account written by Foster himself, explicitly describing acts of sexual abuse against a young child. This note, along with the images, painted a disturbing picture of Foster’s alleged intentions and thoughts.

Further analysis uncovered a total of 131 images and 732 videos depicting child sexual abuse. These were categorized into different levels of severity, with the most serious being Category A, which included images and videos involving sexual penetration, sadism, and acts involving animals. Specifically, six images and 594 videos fell into this most severe category. Additional material included 11 images and 115 videos in Category B, and 114 images along with 23 videos in Category C.

Police investigations spanned over two decades, with the earliest images dating back to June 1, 1998, and the latest from August 28, 2018. During police interviews, Foster initially admitted to downloading some of the images but denied any sexual interest in children. He claimed that he had only opened one file, which he then deleted upon realizing its content, and expressed surprise at the volume of images found. Foster also suggested that his colleagues might have used his hard drive to store the images or that they were sent to him by a friend, denying any knowledge of the extreme material.

Following the discovery, Foster faced multiple charges, including making indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornographic material. His actions and possession of such material led to a serious legal response. At Hull Crown Court, Recorder Simon Eckersley delivered a sentence of 18 months in prison, suspended for two years. The court also mandated a 30-day rehabilitation program, 180 hours of unpaid community work, and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. Additionally, Foster was placed on the Sex Offender’s Register for a decade.

During sentencing, the judge emphasized the gravity of Foster’s crimes, stating, “This is serious offending. These are not victimless crimes. People like you in possession of these images drive further sexual abuse of children.” The court highlighted the large volume of illegal material found across nine devices, underscoring the severity of the case. The judge also pointed out that Foster’s divorce was a direct consequence of his criminal conduct, affecting his personal life and future prospects.
