May 2019 Waltham Abbey man guilty of trying to meet child for sex after getting caught in ‘paedophile hunter sting’ A man from Waltham Abbey has been found guilty of attempting to meet a child for sex after getting caught in a ‘paedophile hunter sting.’ Peter Byrd, 53, of Milton Street, Waltham Abbey, was convicted of attempted to meet a child following grooming today (Thursday May 16) after a trial Chelmsford Crown Court. Byrd had started chatting to a fake profile, known as a decoy, in late October 2017, and was arrested outside The Sun Public House in Waltham Abbey by officers from Essex Police after receiving information from group CSE Interceptors. The CSE Interceptors carry out stings in a bid to bring offenders to justice. He denied the offence but following a trial, the jury found Byrd guilty this morning after six hours and 48 minutes of deliberations. Judge Christopher Morgan adjourned the case for sentence on May 30.
