CORNWALL MAN JAILED FOR 25 YEARS FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
A man from Cornwall has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life after being found guilty of a series of grave sexual offenses against five children. The offender, Peter Bunney, aged 46, with no fixed abode but with links to Truro, Redruth, and Camborne, appeared in Truro Crown Court. The court heard how Bunney was convicted of multiple serious crimes including two indecent assaults on a child, five sexual assaults by penetration on a child under 13, seven rapes of a child under 13, and additional offenses involving sexual activity with children and causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual acts. During the trial, the jury found Bunney guilty of these charges, which spanned over a period of many years. The judge described Bunney as an "entrenched sexual predator who targeted very young girls and sexually abused them for his own gratification for many years." The sentencing followed a complex investigation beginning in 2006 when initial allegations surfaced, but insufficient evidence prevented prosecution at that time. The court was told that Bunney's offending resurfaced in 2020 after two parents reported that Bunney had raped and sexually abused their daughter multiple times, including rape where he offered to pay her to let him do it again. Other victims reported being touched sexually by Bunney, including an incident involving exposing himself at a young age. The victims approached police years later, recounting ongoing abuse, which led to further charges and investigation. Bunney's background was also discussed, revealing a troubled early life, physical injuries, and personal tragedies, which some lawyers argued contributed to his behavior. The judge sentenced Bunney to 25 years, emphasizing the severity and long-standing nature of his crimes, and stated that he was a dangerous individual who victimized very young girls for his own sexual gratification. The police officer leading the case expressed satisfaction with the sentence, commending the victims for their courage and resilience throughout the ordeal.
