PETER BISHOP FROM CHARD SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
In a case that has shocked the community of Chard, Peter Bishop, a 54-year-old local businessman, was sentenced to a five-year prison term after being found guilty of historic child sex offences. The sentencing took place at Taunton Crown Court on Thursday, March 29, following a conviction on three counts of indecent assault involving a girl under the age of 13.During the proceedings, prosecutor Virginia Cornwall presented an impact statement from the victim, revealing the profound and lasting effects of Bishop's actions. The statement detailed how the victim confided in her parents about the abuse, only to be met with disbelief. This lack of support from her family caused significant strain in her relationship with her parents and left her feeling isolated, insignificant, and unable to trust others. The emotional scars inflicted by Bishop's misconduct have haunted her, leaving her with feelings of shame and loneliness.
The jury reached a guilty verdict against Bishop on March 5, a decision that underscored the severity of his crimes. Judge David Ticehurst, presiding over the case, addressed Bishop directly during the sentencing, describing the impact of his actions as 'catastrophic and devastating.'
Judge Ticehurst highlighted the contrast between Bishop's outward appearance and reputation and the dark secret he kept. He noted that Bishop appeared to lead a normal, respectable life, running a successful business and being well regarded within the community of Chard. However, behind this facade was the disturbing reality of his abuse of a young girl.
The judge emphasized that the victim felt ashamed, but clarified that she had nothing to be ashamed of. Conversely, he stated that Bishop had every reason to feel shame for his actions. The judge concluded by condemning Bishop's conduct, asserting that all he had lost—his reputation, freedom, and standing—was entirely the consequence of his own perverted choices and sexual interests directed towards a vulnerable young girl.
