PETER ASHTON'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL IN IPSWICH

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Ipswich, 61-year-old Peter Ashton has been at the center of a disturbing investigation involving the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

The incident came to light after authorities uncovered a significant collection of illicit material stored on his personal laptop, which was seized during a routine visit to his residence on Pearson Road.

On May 2, Ashton appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to two serious charges: making indecent photographs of a child and possessing a prohibited image of a child.

The court was informed that Ashton’s criminal record was already marked by previous convictions, including a 30-month prison sentence handed down at Ipswich Crown Court on April 19, 2000, for two counts of indecent assault on a female and a charge of gross indecency with a child.

Prosecutor Colette Harper provided details of the recent findings, revealing that a public protection officer had visited Ashton’s home on September 19 of the previous year.

During this visit, the officer discovered a laptop containing a troubling array of images.

A thorough search of the device’s browsing history uncovered a total of 600 images, categorized by severity: 588 at Level One, 12 at Level Three, and 2 at Level Four, which is the second-highest grade for indecent images of children.

Additionally, authorities found 208 cartoon images depicting children being abused, further highlighting the severity of the case.

The grading system used, known as the Copine Scale, classifies these images based on their explicit content.

Level One images depict children in non-sexualized, erotic activities, while Level Three involves non-penetrative sexual acts between children and adults.

Level Four images, which Ashton possessed, involve penetrative sexual activity, marking a grave escalation in the severity of his offenses.

During the court proceedings, Ashton’s legal representative, John Hughes, requested leniency, emphasizing that a pre-sentence report suggested Ashton could benefit from participation in the Thames Valley Sex Offenders’ Treatment Programme.

Mr.

Hughes argued that such a course, which takes three years to complete, would be difficult to undertake within a prison setting, and he urged the court to consider alternative measures.

Despite these pleas, the magistrates deliberated at length and ultimately concluded that the seriousness of Ashton’s crimes warranted a custodial sentence.

He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for each of the charges, to be served consecutively, amounting to a total of 32 weeks behind bars.

Furthermore, Ashton was placed under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for a period of ten years, restricting his activities and monitoring his behavior to protect the public from potential reoffending.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Ipswich to combat child exploitation and the possession of illegal images.

It also highlights the importance of rigorous sentencing and supervision to prevent future offenses by individuals with a history of sexual misconduct.
