In a disturbing case that unfolded in Ramsgate, Perry Taliana, a 45-year-old man from Augusta Road, became the focus of a serious criminal investigation after he targeted a young girl with a series of highly inappropriate and sexually explicit text messages. The incident, which took place in February 2013, revealed a troubling pattern of behavior fueled by delusions and a belief system that he claimed was dictated by spiritual entities.

According to court reports, the victim, a 12-year-old girl, had her mobile phone temporarily borrowed by a friend when Taliana, a stranger to her, initiated contact. The first message she received was seemingly innocuous but quickly took a sinister turn. The message read, “Hi, It’s Perry. I’m glad you called,” which the girl did not recognize and responded to with confusion, stating she had not sent any texts.

Later that evening, the girl received another message from the same number, asking her to meet. She responded by explaining her age and expressing her disinterest in meeting him, clearly stating she was only 12 years old and did not want any contact. Despite her clear refusal, Taliana persisted, sending a series of sexually explicit messages that claimed, “It’s not illegal. It’s the natural body’s laws,” attempting to justify his actions based on his distorted beliefs.

The young girl, feeling disgusted and confused, called him back to ask why he had sent such messages. During the call, she told him her age, which further distressed her. Taliana responded with laughter and abruptly ended the call. The following day, he sent another sexually charged message, which prompted the girl to alert her teachers. Concerned, they contacted the police to report the incident.

Police quickly moved to arrest Taliana in March. An analysis of his mobile phones uncovered the disturbing nature of the texts, confirming his involvement. During police interviews, Taliana admitted to sending the messages but claimed that he genuinely believed in what he called “natural law,” which he interpreted as permitting sexual activity with children who had reached puberty, regardless of age. He further explained that he believed he was acting under the influence of spirits, specifically claiming that “the spirit world” had instructed him to send the messages. He also stated that alcohol consumption at the time had impaired his judgment and that he had no intention of pursuing the girl for sex.

The victim later provided a statement to officers, describing her shock and distress upon receiving the messages. She said, “The text messages that I received from a man called Perry, I had not asked for. I was very shocked and upset by the words that he used. Although I understood the meaning behind what was being said to me I was, and still am, very confused why he was speaking to me like that. I am only 12 years old. He knew that because I told him. During the trial at Canterbury Crown Court, Judge Simon James addressed the court, emphasizing the severity of the offense. He pointed out that the victim was a complete stranger to Taliana and that the entire incident was rooted in his delusional beliefs. The judge noted that Taliana had claimed to be a spirit medium, asserting that he had been instructed by the archangel Raphael to contact the girl. Furthermore, the judge highlighted that Taliana was suffering from a psychotic illness at the time, which led him to believe in the existence of archangels and the spirit world, thus providing a context for his actions but not excusing them.

Ultimately, Perry Taliana was sentenced to eight years in prison, with four years to be served behind bars and the remaining four years on license. The court’s decision reflected the gravity of his actions and the danger posed to the community, especially considering his mental health issues and the manipulative nature of his delusions.
