PERRY JONES HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN HUYTON LEAVES PUPPY WITH MULTIPLE FRACTURES

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Perry Jones, a resident of Huyton, was found guilty in 2022 of inflicting severe injuries on his 18-week-old English bull terrier puppy named Lola. The incident, which drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities, revealed a pattern of brutal treatment that left the young dog with multiple fractures and injuries.

Jones, born on July 21, 1999, and a father of one, was charged with three animal welfare offenses after Lola was discovered with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. The injuries were extensive, with x-ray examinations revealing fractures to two of her legs, her hip, four ribs, and her jaw, which had been fractured twice. Veterinary assessments concluded that these injuries had occurred at different times, indicating ongoing abuse rather than a single incident.

When Lola was rescued, she was found to have additional injuries, including a wound to her ear and a red mark on her head. The RSPCA was alerted to the situation following reports from a concerned member of the public about the puppy’s welfare. Inspector Lisa Lupson from the RSPCA responded to the call and visited Jones’ residence at 4 Browning Close, Huyton, on February 24, 2021. Upon arrival, she observed Lola in a state of extreme lethargy and distress.

Inspector Lupson described Lola’s condition: “Rather than walking normally she dragged herself to me, dragging her back end, and this is when I noticed that she was completely non-weight bearing on her left hind leg and struggling to walk. I also noticed that her left ear was hanging low and was swollen with a large scab visible on the inner ear flap. I can only describe her as very miserable and sad.”

Initial claims from Jones suggested that Lola had ongoing medical issues and that he had taken her to the vet two days prior. However, he later admitted that he had not sought veterinary care and claimed that Lola’s injuries resulted from a fall down the stairs. Eventually, Jones confessed to inflicting multiple injuries on the puppy.

Following the inspection, Lola was rushed to Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for urgent treatment. Veterinarians found her to be lame in her left hind leg, which was confirmed to be fractured, necessitating surgical intervention. She also received treatment for the scab on her ear. Further examinations, including additional x-rays, revealed that Lola had a healing fracture on her right back leg, a fractured hip, three fractured ribs on her left side, and one on her right. These injuries were believed to have been inflicted approximately six weeks prior to her rescue. Additionally, her jaw was fractured on both sides, with evidence suggesting these injuries were not recent but had begun to heal.

An independent veterinary expert testified in court, stating: “There are no explanations as to how Lola may have accidentally sustained four rib fractures and two jaw fractures. Fractures of the ribs and jaw are not consistent with falling downstairs, and the injuries are repetitive, having occurred on a number of different occasions. These fractures are a common sign of abuse in animals, often caused by forceful impacts such as being struck, kicked, stomped, or thrown against a blunt object. The presence of bilateral rib fractures strongly indicates physical abuse.”

In mitigation, the court heard that Jones had previously suffered from depression. Despite his actions, Lola was taken into care by the Wirral and Chester branch of the RSPCA, where she received rehabilitation. She is now preparing to start a new chapter in her life with a loving family in her forever home.

Jones was sentenced to an 18-month community order, which includes 25 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirements, a 10-week curfew, and a fine of £1,000 to cover costs, along with a £95 victim surcharge. He was also banned from owning animals for five years, with the possibility of appeal after three years, which will expire in March 2027.

Additional context reveals that Perry Jones was raised by his mother, Michaela Carey, and has a sister named Courtney Carey. Allegations suggest that both women were aware of Jones’s abuse towards Lola but failed to intervene. Attempts to obtain a response from Michaela Carey regarding these allegations were declined.

This case highlights the ongoing issues of animal cruelty and the importance of vigilance and intervention by authorities and the public to protect vulnerable animals from abuse in Huyton and beyond.
